Barba Cave

This wall dive actually consists of two beautiful caves known by local fishermen as L-Għar tal-Barba and L-Għar in-Niexef. The first cave is quite long and at the back one can surface in an air pocket.

Nestled in Dwejra on the western coast of Gozo, Tal-Barba stands as an intriguing yet relatively unexplored cave. Positioned approximately 200 meters from the seaward exit of Inland Sea’s Tunnel, tracing the reef wall in a northerly direction, Tal-Barba cave reveals an entrance at a depth of about 25 meters, extending inward for approximately 120 meters. Its straight configuration ensures a consistently visible exit, complemented by the presence of an air pocket within for divers to surface.

While accessible from the shore, diving Tal-Barba entails a considerable and challenging swim or the use of an underwater scooter. Alternatively, adventurous divers can opt to rent a small boat from Inland Sea, providing convenient drop-offs outside the cave. Upon returning, choices abound – either arrange for the boat to pick them up around the reef or embark on a return dive, with the added opportunity to explore Whale Cave midway to the Inland Sea Tunnel.

In the Maltese language, ‘barba’ translates to beard, a name befitting the cave due to the entrance’s uncanny resemblance to a man’s beard. Though often referred to as 200m Tunnel, it’s essential to clarify that Tal-Barba cave does not actually span 200 meters in length.
