Għar Jaħra

Għar Jaħra literally means ‘The Shitting Cave’. Half a metre above sea level, one can see a narrow opening in the cliff wall. Anyone venturing to explore this crack will find a massive dry cave with its floor covered in pebbles.
Years ago, fishermen used to find this hidden cave very convenient for their needs, thus the name given to this site! The dive itself starts directly below this cave and is dominated by massive boulders littering the seabed along the steep cliff wall. This wall is interrupted only by two interesting caves not far from each other. The first cavern is between 20 to 30 metres deep and its pristine walls and ceiling are literally covered with many different types of encrusting coral sponges, glass bell tunicates, orange sea fans, gold cup coral, virgin lace coral and other small young corals with spiny lobsters seeking refuge amongst them. The second cavern is shallower and is characterised by a massive archway diagonally crossing the outer part of this cavern.
