Għar Qawqla

The entry for the Għar Qawqla dive site is close to an offshore rock rising about 5 m from the surface. Up till the mid 20th century, this rock was still connected to the land, forming a spectacular archway above water.

Gahr Qawqla, an offshore rock rising approximately 5 meters out of the water, offers a unique diving experience with a touch of history. The site was once part of the land until the mid-20th century, forming a spectacular archway above the sea, as depicted in rare black-and-white photographs featuring a boat passing through this natural wonder.

Despite not being the most visually captivating dive, Gahr Qawqla serves as an excellent location for training purposes. As divers descend to a depth of around 10 meters, they are greeted by the remnants of the historic arch, with the underwater landscape adorned by an array of small boulders. The seabed, though modest in its allure, is home to fascinating marine life.

Among the rocks, divers may encounter tiny moray eels and small octopuses, adding an element of excitement to the dive. The marine inhabitants, including scorpionfish, moray eels, common octopus, European parrotfish, and Mediterranean damselfish, contribute to the biodiversity of the site.

While Gahr Qawqla may not boast breathtaking underwater vistas, its historical significance, combined with the chance to observe intriguing marine species, makes it a worthwhile destination, particularly for those looking to enhance their diving skills in a unique setting.
