Sphyraena sphyraena

Sphyraena sphyraena (European Barracuda)

Sphyraena sphyraena, the European barracuda, is a ray-finned predatory fish of the Mediterranean basin and the warmer waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The genus Sphyraena belongs to the family Sphyraenidae, the order Perciformes, class Actinopterygii, phylum Chordata and kingdom Animalia.  The genus Sphyraena is the only genus in the family Sphyraenidae.

Sphyraena sphyraena is normally a pelagic species found high in the water column, but smaller fish are often found near the bottom of the water column.  The main food is other fish but sometimes includes cephalopods and crustaceans.  They are a social species and large groups of Sphyraena sphyraena could number between ten and a few hundred.

Sphyraena sphyraena has a long, fairly compressed body which is covered with small, smooth scales.  It has a large mouth with a projecting lower jaw.  The jaws are lined with prominent sharp teeth.  It is dark above and silvery below with a yellow band running parallel to the lateral line. They are normally around 30 to 60 cm in length and weigh 6 kg but there are records of fish 165 cm long and reaching weights of 12 kg or more.

The barracuda gill covers have no spines and are covered with small scales.  Their two dorsal fins are widely separated, with the anterior fin having five spines, and the posterior fin having one spine and 9 soft rays.  The posterior dorsal fin is similar in size to the anal fin and is situated above it.  The lateral line is prominent and extends straight from head to tail.  The spinous dorsal fin is placed above the pelvic fins and is normally retracted in a groove.  The caudal fin is moderately forked with its posterior edged double-curved and is set at the end of a stout peduncle.  The pectoral fins are placed low on the sides.  Its swim bladder is large.

The photo of this shoal of barracuda was taken at a depth of 8 m near Crocodile Rock, a natural offshore reef at Dwejra, not far from the famous Azure Window, on Gozo’s west coast.

Our club goes out to Malta/Gozo every year and Atlantis was by far the best centre we have dealt with. The communication building up to the trip was great. So helpful. Our club has a mixed range of diver levels and Atlantis made sure that all our levels was covered. On arrival the welcome was very warming. They couldn’t have been more helpful. Once the admin and kit issue was done we was on our way. The end I’ve every day the team was on hand to assist us making sure we was all prepared for the following day. Nitrox, stages, fills and so on. The end of our trip the staff even came to the apartment to say farewell and seen us off. One of our club members left their regs by mistake but the team contacted us and meet us at the ferry port to return them. Thank you so much!!! We will be returning next year.

I did a package deal of 10 dives with Atlantis and was extremely impressed from the get go. The center was very well equipped and maintained and the staff were awesome, totally committed to making sure everyone was welcomed and having fun whilst keeping a high level of professionalism. The guides (Denis, Georgia, Apollo, George) were very knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend Atlantis to anyone looking for a solid and trustworthy center with fair prices. P.s. Go in November, its way less busy and the vis is still good!
