The Maltese Islands have been awarded Best diving destination in the world a number of times now. Acclaimed as the 2nd ‘Best Diving Destination’ at two prestigious award ceremonies in London: the Diver and Sport Diver Awards. This recognition solidifies the Maltese archipelago’s position as the top diving location in the Mediterranean, celebrated for its diverse marine life, thrilling wrecks, and stunning underwater topography.
The awards, determined by readers of Diver Magazine, Sport Diver Magazine, and visitors to their respective websites, reflect the high esteem in which the Maltese Islands are held within the diving community. The Diver Awards ceremony, held at the main LIDS hall at Excel London during the International Dive Show, was presented by the renowned diving explorer and celebrity, Monty Halls.
Malta and Gozo achieved an impressive 2nd place, surpassing renowned diving destinations like the Maldives. This accolade highlights the islands’ range of exciting wrecks, variety of marine life, and excellent shore-diving opportunities. The ‘Best Diving Destination Of The Year’ category featured strong competition from top global diving spots, with Egypt securing first place and the Maldives taking third.
With some of the most excellent wrecks and stunning underwater topography in the northern hemisphere, the Maltese islands boast underwater arches, caves, superb visibility, and an array of interesting aquatic life in a very relaxed environment. These factors make the Maltese islands a must-dive location for recreational divers and tech enthusiasts alike. Only a short hop from most major European airports, Malta’s agreeable climate allows for year-round diving, although it’s chilly in the winter.
While Malta may not be voted the best every single year, we are still immensely proud that our local dive sites around Gozo, Malta and Comino and the diverse Maltese marine life continue to make so many divers happy and create a buzz in the diving community.
