On the surface, Wied il-Mielaħ dive site is characterised by a massive arch jutting out from the high and sheer cliff walls. This spectacular scenery is extended to the underwater world where divers can explore two caverns and a tunnel directly below the arch. A shallow submerged rocky ledge, protruding outwards from the base of the arch, is home to prolific fish life, most especially shoals of barracuda.
Explore the underwater wonders of Wied il-Mielah, located near the village of L-Gharb in Gozo. Situated near a ‘rock window,’ reminiscent of the collapsed Azure Window in March 2017, this dive site offers a unique and captivating underwater experience.
Accessible only by boat, Wied il-Mielah boasts a reef extending about 12 meters deep and 30 meters long, ideal for anchoring. The area between the reef and the wall provides a thrilling pass-through at 18 meters depth. Divers can venture towards the valley to discover a large cave with an airlock, offering a scenic and beginner-friendly exploration at the end of the dive.
For deep divers, the eastern direction reveals a wall dropping to 50 meters and beyond. To the west lies another picturesque cave, adding to the photogenic allure of Wied il-Mielah. The seabed slopes down to 18-20 meters with scattered boulders, creating an underwater landscape worth exploring.
Dive enthusiasts can encounter a variety of aquatic life, including amberjack, mola mola, common octopus, tuna, Mediterranean cardinalfish, and dentex. The underwater scenery is enhanced by beautiful sponges covering boulders, creating a vibrant and colorful backdrop.
One of the highlights is a shoal of barracudas often spotted at 30-35 meters when heading straight out from the archway into the blue. The dive also features two caverns to explore, with the possibility of surfacing in a small air chamber in one of them.
